mexico city day of the dead

Mexico is one of the most vibrant, culturally rich, and breathtaking destinations in the world. From the colonial charm of Puebla to the beach vibes of Cabo San Lucas, and the bustling streets of Mexico City to the serene shores of Cozumel, there’s something for every traveler. But with so much buzz around safety, it’s natural to wonder: Is Mexico safe to visit?

The short answer? Like any large country, Mexico’s safety varies by region, city, and even neighborhood. Millions of travelers visit Mexico each year without incident, but staying informed and taking basic precautions can make your trip safer and more enjoyable.

My Experience Living in Mexico: From Mexico City to Playa del Carmen

Mexico City — or CDMX as the locals call it — is a whirlwind of culture, color, and community. Living there opened my eyes to a city bursting with history and modern energy, where every corner tells a story. What makes Mexico City truly special for African Americans and Black expats is its welcoming vibe and rich diversity. The cost of living is more affordable than many Western cities, which means you can enjoy Mexican cuisine, vibrant art scenes, festivals, and more without breaking the bank.

Job opportunities abound too, with global companies like EY and TikTok planting roots here. For families and young professionals, CDMX offers the perfect mix of education, career growth, and culture. I loved walking through neighborhoods like Roma Norte, Condesa, and Polanco – each with its own personality, from tree-lined streets and colonial architecture to sleek skyscrapers and buzzing cafés. And the people? Always warm and inviting. I’d get greeted on the street or asked for photos (sidenote: if you feel like asking for photos is invasive, this is something to consider before going.)

Life in Playa Del Carmen

If a slower pace and beach life are more your style, many rave about Tulum — and while it’s beautiful, I found a different gem just down the coast: Playa del Carmen. This laid-back town on the Yucatan Peninsula offers stunning blue beaches (when it’s not seaweed season), a vibrant expat scene, and a sense of community that’s hard to beat.

What really made Playa special for me were the local expat Facebook and WhatsApp groups. These communities introduced me to friends for life and made my months there feel like home. Whether you’re drawn to entrepreneurship, wellness, or simply soaking up the natural beauty, Playa del Carmen has something for you. It’s also a wonderful place for Black families looking to thrive — with a supportive community and plenty of space to grow.

Mexico surprised me in the best ways: a place where culture meets opportunity, and where you can find your own kind of home away from home. Whether the city buzz of Mexico City or the coastal charm of Playa del Carmen calls you, Mexico offers endless possibilities for connection, growth, and joy.
