What drew me and many Black expats to Bangkok is its sense of adventure, delicious cuisine, affordable cost of living, and friendly locals. Equally, it is a place to work and thrive in. However, unless you have an American contract stating you’ll be paid in USD, you’ll likely be paid in Thai Baht which is worth significantly less than the dollar. Whether you’re drawn to the vibrant street markets, ancient temples, or the bustling nightlife, Bangkok has something for everyone.
2. Mexico City, Mexico – Best Places for Black Families to Live in the World

This more established town + beach hybrid found on the Yucatan Peninsula is called Playa del Carmen.

Posting because I have seen a lot of black travel posts like this. So wanted to share my experience. I had been reading a lot about Mexico City before my recent visit. I was so excited. But I had a terrible time. I’m black/mixed race and I’m used to people staring at me with curiosity, traveling or otherwise. Not a big deal at this point in my life. But Mexico City stares were very unfriendly. People literally stopped to stare. And smiling or greeting people warmly did not change the outcome. I had my bags searched in retail experiences when no others did. I was told by a local that lots of “bad people” were moving in. People are probably just thinking I’m one of them. He said all the Cubans coming in are bad people and people are probably just suspicious of anyone who looks Cuban.
I also have a friend that works as a nurse on the border. She sees a lot of Haitian immigrants coming through Mexico. She reported that people treat the Haitians very cruelly and are very racist towards them. Maybe if you go to Mexico City and just move there to go to tourist attractions and stay at hotels it would be cool. But I found the things that you have to do to live somewhere, like shop for groceries and run errands outside of tourist areas pretty awful. *My European partner and I both try to use native language anywhere we go and try to bend to culture of any place we are visiting. When we together people were a little less rude but he even noticed how intensely people were staring.
Also, a friend of mine recommended I watch a short film called Jamaica y Tamarindo. It was a really eye opening film on black/afro-mexican perception and experience. I wish I would have known about it before going to CDMX.
Oof, this was powerful. Thank you for sharing your experience in Mexico City with all of us- the negative you experienced there is just as important as the positive that I experienced. To tell you the truth, I lived in CDMX for 3 months and traveled to non-touristic places which is why I felt I had seen enough good to recommend it. The staring part is true, although it was more to comment positively on how I looked, man do Mexicans in Mexico City love to stare. Yet as a fellow black woman traveler, I’m used to the stares as they’ve become a part of my daily. I was also often greeted warmly which is why it saddens me that wasn’t the case for you. Mexico’s history with Africa is long and thorough given it’s relationship with the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. As a result, many Mexicans have African blood in them- whether they claim it or or honor it is case to case.
With that being said, there is always a difference of reception between Western black people like you and I vs. African or Caribbean born black ppl that I too have noticed. Not just in Mexico, but around the world. I’ve always perceived it to be due to the assumed wealth of westerners who are willing to spend on whatever is being sold. I can only conjecture, but your comment sparks an idea for the next time I visit that tackles this question with native Mexicans head on.
